We saw this guy on our walk Friday morning at about 11:15am. Another woman on the trail warned us that he was there & something was definitely wrong because he did not move when we (Dan, I, & our dog) got near... I called around to a bunch of places trying to find someone to help & was finally directed via Idaho Fish & Game to call Birds of Prey Northwest. The woman there told me that in order to help the Osprey we had to capture it & bring it to a vet in Post Falls. I went for a run around 4:00pm & it was still there in the same spot which I concluded meant that no one else was going to do anything about it, or he had not been noticed. He was down right near the water at the bottom of a 10 foot section of steep rocks so hard to see unless you were looking. When Dan got off work we recruited a friend & attempted to capture the very large bird of prey following the biologist from Birds of Prey Northwest's instructions.
When Jake & Dan got near to him the first time he floated out into the lake a couple of feet. His wings seemed fine but he seemed unable to fly. Strangely he swam back to shore even closer to the boys than he was before.
"Hey little buddy!" Mind you his talons are a good two inches long,
so real nervous at this point.
Sorry about the poor quality on these shots, we left the camera at home so I took these on my iPhone.
We just wrapped him up in the towel like a baby.
I think that we were supposed to cover his head.
We did not & it worked out for us. He seemed to like to be able
to see what was going on.
When we spoke to the biologist later she was amazed that
we were able to capture him because the x-rays showed no fractures.
They were not sure what is wrong with him, but if he is able to be released back into the wild they will put him back at the same place & let us help release him.
He did grip onto the towel with his beak like this for about 30 minutes.
A safety thing? Just glad that it was not one of our fingers!
Peeking out of his box during the hour drive to Post Falls.
Storms rolled in during the evening on our way home so really glad
that he did not have to spend the night out on the rocks by the cold water.

So we just got an email from the Birds of Prey Northwest & found out that "she" is doing well! Apparently she had a dislocated shoulder but is recovering well so far.
